The best food place in Haymarket, VA is a tiny carry out place. Jack and I go there frequently when we want great tasting food at a very reasonable price prepared in the European continental style. We get the food which always includes an entre complete with a starch, vegetable and hard roll. Then we take it home and serve it on china plates with a nice glass of wine or bottle of beer.
Look at the closeup of the authentic German style sauerbraten with gravy flowing over the spatzle noodles and the slow roasted meat with the luscious cooked red cabbage and hard roll completing this huge overflowing serving. When the weather is nice we like to dish up the food and drinks and head to the patio table to dine by the flower gardens. Here is a plate of roast porkshenk with sauerkraut and roll that I had recently. (That day they ran out of the potatoes so I got a double helping of sauerkraut that has whole peppercorns.) Here Jack has just finished off one large weiswurst (white sausage) and is about to dive into that remaining wurst which is a bratwurst (red sausage). Oh, so good! Here are Jack and Jack saying hello to Fritz, Heinrich Hoffman's brother, before they enter the double blue doors to get our take out food which surely is not your typical take out food.
Jack Aidan likes going inside to visit with the two chefs: Heinrich Hoffman from Austria and Anna Hoffman from Brazil. I think Anna has adopted Jack Aidan as her grandson because she always wants to give him a big hug and kiss and a big homemade cookie! Our Jack also just loves the Black Forest chocolate cake that is sometimes available. I hope I have made your mouth water since it now close to lunch time here in Haymarket. You will learn that Heinrich is a classically trained chef from Austria who operates not only this take out business but a famous and long running catering business that caters parties for the Washington D.C. power elite like the Mars Family of the Mars Candy Furtune. (Several Mars family members make Forbes 'List of the top ten richest Americans.)
Now I'm going to give you all fair warning. This blog post I would like to hook up to Fishing Guy's My World Tuesday Meme which has its grand kick off today. Whether I accomplish this or not remains to be seen. I'm glad this post doesn't have sound or else you may hear a few uh-ohhs or something a little stronger being said in the process.
Great balls of fire! Grandma figured this out without consulting Grandpa who by the way was making a run to Alibi Catering for lunch. Jack got the stuffed cabbage and I got the pork loin from today's carry out selection. Got to go photograph the food before Jack eats his and mine!
Definitely not typical take-out. And I'm just a tad bit jealous that this is conveniently available to you AND at a reasonable price. Yum, yum!

I'm not a big sauerkraut fan. Still this looks like fun! I've been meaning to tell Jack and Jack that my father's name was Jack. I remember having to tell the teacher the whole story every year when she filled out the forms, "Isn't your father's real name John, dear?" His older brother was named John Carr (his Dad's first name and mother's maiden name) when a childless, unmarried friend asked my grandparents to name the new baby after him and he would leave him his fortune. His name was John "Jack" Hicks, so my father's name was Jack Hicks Hopper. He used to sign everything JHHopper. Since my married initials are the same, it pleases me to be jhhymas in my web presence. Gosh, I didn't think this would be such a long story. My dad did get a small inheritance many years later, after the death of the late-married much-younger widow. Her nephew was the lawyer who handled all the disappearing money.
ReplyDeleteOh, my June. Great comment. My Jack is legally a Jackie like in Jackie Lee Gleason and Jackie Lee Cooper and Jackie Lee Robinson. Jackie Lee used to be a common man's name. Today it is only used for girls.

LOL! And we also get a lot of folks who think his real name is John. When Jack says his real name is Jackie they go ohhhhhhh and then look at him strangely! What a stitch!
Joann: I am so proud of you. That is a working link back to My World and the food reminds me of the times I've gone to Wisconsin on business. We do have one place in town thst serves some of these dishes but it's not inexpensive. I love that little Jack got in the post.

ReplyDeleteMust say you are so lucky to get real European food for take-aways, we only get Asian or fish and chips..pretty uninspiring though sometimes useful. The meals were very close to my home cooking and heart, although nowadays our meals are about a third that size.

Now that was not fair, being german and live here in the states it is really hard to get some good german cooking. My mother made the best. YUM!
