August Bookclub Read

Last Friday night we met at Haelie's house for our August bookclub and to discuss this historic Charles Dicken's novel Oliver Twist. Haelie chose the book because her daughter was in the play Oliver based on the book at her school. Most of you will recall that the movie Oliver that was based on this book. The movie was dark and depressing because the book was dark and depressing. We did not concentrate on the darkness but based our discussion on the fact that Charles Dickens was one of the first writers to write in the new genre known as a novel so consequently he approached in a different fashion from today's novelists. The book characters are static and one dimensional in comparison to the highly developed personalities of today's novel characters. Sometimes you learn a lot by discussing and old classic book.

Sidenote: this was the smallest group that ever met for a bookclub meeting. A lot of the members were on August vacations or had other commitments that prevented them from attending the meeting. Poor Haelie. She prepared food for an army of people but only had three of us show up for the meeting. Sorry Haelie.

July Bookclub Read

July Bookclub Read

Our July bookclub read was a delightful romp across the U.S. in a car with a middle age married father and his sister's middle age Eastern religion guru who practiced a combination of Buddhism and other Eastern religious practices. Funny scenes and enlightening religious thoughts between the two leads the reader to view the world in a different light. This was an easy read that I enjoyed. I must have read the book in less then two days.

Little Bee, by Chris Cleve

This was our book club read for February and it was a hard book to read because of two things: the brutal events in the book and the suspicion that some of the plot didn't ring true. Like it really could not have happened. If you want an unusual story about an illegal African girl detained in England and of the English couple who first met up with this girl on a lonely beach in Nigeria this is the book for you. But if you prefer plots that are realistic and not as brutal, please stay away from this book. The Immoveable Feast

John Baxter, an Australian living in Paris, relates how he was chosen to be the head chef for his French wife's Christmas Day feast. Each chapter relates something being served for the meal and each chapter begins with a quote. This was my favorite quote in the book:

There are three possible parts to a date, of which at least two must be offered: entertainment, food, and affection. It is customary to begin a series of dates with a great deal of entertainment,a moderate amount of food, and the merest suggestion of affection. As the amount of affection increases, the entertainment can be reduced proportionately. When the affection is the entertainment, we no longer call if dating.

Under no circumstances can the food be omitted.

July's Book Club Book Selection

The July book club selection was Jennifer Weiner's book, Best Friends Forever. This would be an easy read to take on vacation to the beach or to a mountain cabin. It chronicles what happens many times in real life. Girls who are best friends in grade school go their separate ways once they reach middle school or high school. One may become a popular cheerleader while the other becomes the school outcast.

What's interesting about this book is what happen after the girls meet again in later adulthood.
I don't want to give the plot away but just say that I don't believe the ending would happen in real life. But this is a great summer vacation read.

If you like this book, you may want to pick up Weiner's latest book which just came out this month.

Very Important News Flash: While I was hosting book club here in Virginia my nephew's youngest daughter, Eliza Gariety, became the 2010 Little Miss Chick at the Poultry Days Festival in Versailles, Ohio. Hurrah! Eliza is the five year old daughter of Greg and Connie Gariety of Russia, Ohio.

Piedmont Book Club Meeting October 9

Have you ever read any James Michener books? He was a prolific writer of the second half of the twentieh century who could wrap an encyclopedic amount of information into the story he was writing. Chesapeake begins like most of his novels in pre recorded times and then progresses throught the sagas of the families to President Nixon and Watergate. If you would like to learn more about the Chesapeake Bay---all the geography, history, wildlife, and industry, then this is the book for you. Even Frank Perdue is mentioned in this book and you learn that the term Delmarva stands for peninsula in the bay that is shared by three states: Delaware, Maryland and Virginia.

James Michener was born in 1907 and died in 1997. He was a foundling who was adopted by a Quaker woman. Michener loved travel and by the age of 20 he had been to almost every state in the union. He was a war historian during World War II and his first novel was about Japan. Later his third wife would be Japanese. Michener is connected to the University of Northern Colorado where he taught for a time. In his later years he lived in Texas and taught at the University of Texas. Michener was the perfect writer for a country that was expanding. He wrote novels on the new states of Alaska and Hawaii and on the growing states of Colorado and Texas.

In 1997 at the age of 90 he died after deciding to forgo any more daily dialysis treatments for diabetes which he had been doing for four years. He definitely deserves a place in American literature.
