Kara Lawson

Kara Lawson
Jack and I watched Kara Lawson play many basketball games for West Springfield High here in northern Virginia. We noticed this week that she is now a half time announcer for ESPN sports network. Way to go Kara Lawson!

Letter to Washington Post

Letter to Washington Post
I agree with the writer who worries that the Susan G. Komen campaign for breast cancer awareness has turned all cancers to pink. That is not true. I have leukemia which is a lymphoma.
The color for leukemia is lime green and the month designated for leukemia is September.

Washington Nationals Pitcher in Russia, Ohio!

News Flash: Washington Nationals Pitcher, Craig Stammen, who graduated from Versailles High School in Versailles, Ohio gave a pitching class to the students of Russia Local School. For more good info on this event go to the address below to read story and see pics.

It is on the famous Fish Report: http://fishreportonline.com/

The publisher of the Fish Report is Craig Feissinger, a Russia, Ohio resident who started the report in 2004. Locals use it for news happenings as well as former Russia, Ohio residents who now live out of state and want to keep us with the happenings in dear old Roo-shee. I know Craig because he is married to the daughter of the Russia family that used to rent my father's brick ranch farmhouse on Miller Rd. south of Russia.

Final Thought: my late brother Harold Gariety who pitched for Russia Local High School's baseball team and for the army's Black Knights baseball team in Sendai, Japan in the fifties would have been thrilled to witness this event.

Box Turtle Drug Bust

Earlier this morning I was reading the Washington Post and having a cup of coffee on my patio while the outside was still cool and refreshing when I came across a funny article. The story is about box turtle #72 who lives in Rock Creek Park. (Yes, the same beautiful park in northwest Washington that played center stage in the famous Chandra Levy disappearance and murder.) This time a little box turtle equipped with a transmitter led a researcher to a newly planted field of marijuana. The marijuana farmer was a college student from upscale Chevy Chase, MD who was making a little college expense money. Click here to learn more of the story. Box Turtle #72 according to the writer of this article has a brain the size of a raisin. Take a look. She is a cutie pie!

What Are They Stealing Now?

The Washington Post's crime report for Prince William County today had 11 incidents of copper being stolen. These copper capers are taking place at commercial and home construction sites as well as from telephone poles and in one incident from a home residence. I can remember when the Bisbee Copper Mine in Bisbee, Arizona closed down because it was no longer profitable to mine copper there. Now the cost of copper has skyrocketed because of all the new construction in both China and the Middle East and so these copper thieves are stealing used copper. Amazing. Can you imagine the unlucky homeowners who came home to discover the copper missing from their house and since copper is mainly used for water pipes in a house I wonder if they had a flooded home as well. Stealing copper from telephone poles and electrical poles is disconcerting too---not good for Americans and our country's security. I wonder who these copper thieves are? What do you think?
