Skywatch Friday = Tour of Deep South

Skywatch Friday = Tour of Deep South
Ten antebellum plantation homes in ten days!
**********
Blue skies, sunshine and flowers greeted Jack and I in Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi.
***
Take a look below.
And come back each day this coming week to do a virtual tour of these lovely plantation homes.
We always stop at each state's welcome center.
This one is for Mississippi.
Did you know that before the civil war Mississippi was the richest state in the union?
Here is the inside the nicely decorated welcome center
with a photo of Gov. Hailey Barbour on the wall.
Here is a lifesize cutout of the most famous Mississippian,
The King, Elvis Presley!
Here is the Louisiana flag flying over the Louisiana welcome center.
The welcome center had a plantation feel in the architecture.
Flags flying over the Alabama welcome center.
At one time each of these flags represented Alabama.
Alabama believes in states rights.
Come back tomorrow to see lots of photos
of two famous antibellum plantations in Natchez, Mississippi.

Skywatch Friday = Rainy Weather and Grey Skies

Skywatch Friday = Rainy Weather and Grey Skies
The spring rains are here in Virginia. We need them to green up the grass and to refresh our dry flower beds.
Jack and I raked and picked up leaves the other week and pruned almost all the rose bushes.
Now we need to let mother nature make it look spring like.
Pitter patter falls the rain.
That's all folks. Have a good weekend. Remember that the oscars are on Sunday night.
Even if you haven't seen most of the movies, it is fun to see the stars in their outlandish outfits.

Skywatch Friday = Heavy Snow and Long Commute

Skywatch Friday = Heavy Snow and Long Commute
This recent snow in the Washington D.C. area was worse than both big blizzards last winter. People spent hours and hours stuck in traffic. It took six hours for our son-in-law to go from Fall Churchs to Haymarket. It took our neighbor ten hours to go from the DEA headquarters in D.C. to his home in Haymarket. He made it home by 2:00 A.M.!
Jack and I really appreciate that we don't need to leave home to go to work or try to figure out how to get home from work since we are both retired. We just sit in our warm home and listen to the horror stories on the local news and read about them on Facebook. Another big problem was power outages. Over 300,000 homes in the D.C. area lost power and not all the home have power restored yet. It will take several days.
It is a pretty winter wonderland to enjoy as long as you don't have to venture out in the snow.

Skywatch Friday = Grey Skies At Wegmans

Skywatch Friday = Grey Skies At Wegmans Grocery Store
Jack and I love the Wegmans Grocery chain that started as a grocery business in New York state.
I like to describe it to folks who have never experienced a Wegmans grocery as a gourmet grocery with great value that is like a crossroads mix between Williams Sonoma, Pottery Barn, a wine and cheese shop, bakery, florist shop, fish market, and ethnic food store and restaurant. If you can't find it at Wegmans, you can't find it.

This Wegmans is on state route #29 .

This is another view of this shopping center. More grey skies.
But what do you expect in December in the greater United States.

Skywatch Friday = The 18'th Hole At Piedmont Golf Club

Skywatch Friday = The 18'th Hole At Piedmont Golf Club

in

Our Gated Golf Club Community

This is the smallest pond on the Piedmont Golf Course and it is surrounded with weeping willows and cattails. Notice that the leaves on the weeping willows have turned yellow while the skies are very grey today. It has suddenly turned really cold in the last 24 hours. We went from 65 degrees yesterday morning to 40 degrees yesterday afternoon!

I like this view. It looks like late fall but the greens are still very green. The nice thing about weeping willows is that they are one of the last trees to lose their leaves in the fall and one of the first trees to send out new leaves in the spring.
The skies are grey but a little bit of blue is showing thru the clouds.

That's it. Now please go visit some other Skywatch Friday memes by clicking here:

Skywatch Friday = Lots of Rain Along Atlantic Seaboard

Skywatch Friday = Lots of Rain Along The Atlantic Seaboard
Lots of Grey Skies and Rain Coming Down in Haymarket, VA

I checked the rain gauge and at 4:00 P.M. we had close to 3 1/2 inches since yesterday evening. Update: Friday morning our rain count has reached 5 1/4 inches.
Everything is getting wet and puddles are popping up in my flowerbeds.
In contrast to the first three pics look at these last two pics. I took these yesterday morning whileit was still dry. I could just begin to see a little color on the trees.
Less than a month from now my backyard will be sporting lots of yellow, orange and red color.

Final Thought For This Post: This is the first time I have been able to post on Skywatch Friday since we experienced the lost of our daughter Jeanine's fiance, Bryan Rearick. Bryan died at the young age of 35 of a massive heart attack on August 24. We all miss him so much.

For those of you that knew of this family tragedy and sent us your condolences thank you so much. It is comforting to know that you are keeping Jeanine and Bryan's parents in your thoughts and prayers.

Skywatch Friday = Grey Skies This Past Week

Skywatch Friday = Grey Skies This Past Week

Northern Virginia has had lots of grey skies and rain this past week. These photos were taken in
old town Alexandria, VA where we were meeting up with our younger daughter a week ago Friday for lunch. We parked in a lot near the waterfront park and Potomac River so I grabbed my camera to take these pics as we were heading towards Duke Street.

Grey skies didn't hamper the sailboat enthusiasts.

But whenever old town Alexandria gets lots of rain streets needed to be blocked off because old town is in the flood plain of the Potomac River.

This blocked street was half a block from the river.

Another closed street near the river.

Skywatch Friday = Friday Concerts At Evergreen In Haymarket

Skywatch Friday = Friday Concerts At Evergreen In Haymarket, VA
***
Evergreen Country Club is off state route 15 in a lovely wooded housing development that has large homes on five acre lots. This land used to be a part of a 1000 acre pre-civil war plantation. In the photo above the original house is the white stucco middle section. The beautiful rock wings to each side of the middle section of the home were added by a later owner in the 1920's before the stock market crashed and the Great Depression began. Plans have been created to restore this home so to raise money for the restoration work five summer concerts this year have been planned. These photos were taken at the second concert on Friday June 18 which featured the band Standing Room Only that played classic rock.
June 18 was a lovely day with blue skies and cool temps for a change of pace.

People brought the babies, old ladies, kids of assorted ages, their lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy a summer evening under the stars. The concert was free but all profits from the sale of food and drinks went to support the restoration of the Evergreen plantation home. Our family has enjoyed three of these concerts and two more will be coming up later in July.
July 18 The Wil Gravatt Band will play country music
July 23 Glass Onion Band will play Beatles music.
The band performed on the backside of the home that had a small covered porch.
Here is the front side of the home with its majestic two story white pillars and old boxwood evergreens..

This building is the country club for the Evergreen Golf Club.

As the sun was beginning to fade in the west golfers were still golfing or enjoying the Friday night happy hour on the patio of the golf club.

The old rock walled formal garden is always set up with white chairs in the summertime for wedding ceremonies. In the distance you can see the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.
Hope you enjoyed your virtual tour of the Evergreen Country Club and remember if you are a local the two remaining concerts in July.
