#1 Wouldn't you just love to be a fly on the wall in the White House today when the Runaway

General arrives.

#2 Yes, we are having a heat wave----a desert heat wave. I was moaning about our Arizona

style temperatures with no rain when I read about the poor folks in Iraq going thru summer

temps up in the 120's and enduring it with only a half day of electrical power which means

no air conditioning for half the day if they even have it all in their homes. And then thinking

of our young troops in boots and camouflage and helmets enduring those high temps.

#3 We have been doing our maintenance mowing, trimming and gardening very early in the

day just like we used to do years ago in Arizona. There our motto was if it isn't done by

10:00 A.M. , it isn't getting done today.

#4 Looks like South America is dominating the World Cup. The U.S. plays today.

#5 The big National League debate is whether Steven Strasburg should be chosen as one of the

just 13 pitchers chosen for the All Star Game after just three times on the mound. Money

always talks so he might get chosen because he would do two things: bring in lots of money

and give the National League a chance to win the game.

#6 It is now officially summertime. We need to enjoy each and every day as much as possible.

I don't know about you but this is what I dream of in late January.

#7 Our baby Jeanine moves tomorrow. It will be a hot day for the movers. We better have

lots of cold water for them.

I don't like how today's layout looks but bear with me. It is just too hot today to waste time fiddling with this blogpost. It is 8:20 and I'm already thinking siesta in the darken family room. LOL!

I do feel sorry for anyone working outside today in this heat. I think today will be a code orange day.

April Musings

April Musings

#1 Well the college basketball season is over. None of my picks made it to the Final Four. Jack did get one right---Duke. In the championship game I was cheering for the underdog Butler while Jack was cheering for a team representing the ACC which the University of Virginia is also a member.

#2 So we keep moving on with special events for the year. Now it is golf at Augusta. That should be interesting.

#3 Television has me watching Survivor, American Idol, Dancing With The Stars and Celebrity Apprentice. I want either Kate or the astronaut to go home tonight. I'm glad the ex-governor of Illinois got fired by Trump. What a computer illiterate! I liked Sharon's comment---who talks like that? "delicate dynamic" and the group's answer: a politician! The Ohio girl who sings and plays guitar and piano should win American Idol hands down in my humble opinion.

#4 Today felt like summer with a high of 90 degrees in Virginia! I think my hosta grew at least an inch in today's heat.

I Love The Month of March!

Why?

March ushers in the spring season after cruel, cruel winter.

March means that my baby girl, Jeanine, gets to celebrate her birthday on March 4'th.

*

March days are usually warmer.

*

March days are longer, especially after we "spring forward" at the beginning of the month.

*

March means spring vacations for study weary college students and seniors who head to

Florida when they are almost guaranteed nice weather south of Tallahassee.

*

March means get out in the yard on the warm days and clean out the flower beds of dirt, leaves,

and dead perennial "tops". (Jack and I did this for for four days last week. Mon.-Thurs.)

*

March means stay inside on the rainy days that will green the lawn and plan your flowerbeds

for this year. (I'm so anxious to make some needed changes to the flowerbeds. I love spring!)

*

March means that all the birds are back and going nuts singing songs to attract mates and

build nests. It sure is fun to watch these lusty fellows. Better than watching teens preparing

for the spring prom!

March has St. Patrick's Day when we can drink green beer and pretend we are Irish even if

we are not Irish.

*

March means the first flowers will bloom. (I have crocus in bloom now and my daffodils are

getting ready to bloom before the end of the month.)

March means the first flowering trees will bloom. (Our pear trees have buds that are getting

big and fuzzy. Same with the saucer magnolia trees by our swing.)

*

March means the roses are showing signs of life and need to be pruned pronto.

*

March means April is just around the corner and April is one of the most lovely months of

the year with the azaleas and rhododendrons in bloom.

March is the best month to adopt a puppy says The Washington Post. Our Jeanine

just did this this past Saturday.

and fall.

March is the time to think about who is going to the prom, who is graduating and who

is getting married this year.

March means Jack and I need to prepare for Jeanine's wedding this fall. Yipee!

Question: Why blame Washington? The citizens of each state and the district put these people into office. So the citizens need to blame themselves for electing jerks.

And what does this have to do with Tiger Woods? Well, Tiger said at his press conference that he felt entitled to break his marriage vows. These politicians felt that they were above the law and common decency They felt that they were entitled too.

Random Musings on This and That for Thursday

#1 When you picture an apple in your mind is it always red? I always picture a red apple. But I bet good old Martha Stewart could show us apples in a dozen colors and shapes. I think we have been brainwashed by the kindergarten teachers. Walk into almost any American kindergarten classroom and the calendar for September probably has the numbers on apples, red apples. Now why couldn't the apples be green or yellow?

#2 All summer I watched the following two shows: Big Brother and America's GotTalent. I was so happy to see Jordan win the $500,000 on Big Brother. She was so cute and honest that it was like a breath of fresh air. And then that country singer with the saddest face I have ever seen won the America's Got Talent show contest.

#3 Tonight the fall reality show Survivor starts. I can't wait!

#4 Jay Leno's brand new 10:00 P.M. show started this week. You know what I think. First, this is just the same show we saw at 11:35 P.M. for so many years. Nothing looks different to me. He just ditched the desk! Second, Jay Leno and NBC are doing this for all us old folks who no longer can stay up past the late night news to watch the late night show. Baby Boomers we have been saved by Jay Leno. We can get our nightly laughs and still get a good night's sleep too.

#5 Do you know any wahoos? A wahoo is a student, professor or alum of the that great Virginia public university that is always listed in the top 25 colleges or universities in the nation---the University of Virginia. Our older daughter is a wahoo and I think she would like for little Jack Aidan to be a wahoo someday too. #6 Hoof and Mouth Disease. It happens to cows and it has also happened recently to Rep. Joe Wilson of South Carolina and to Kanye West on the MTV Awards Show. Quick somebody call a vet.

#7 Have you picked up on this. Almost every week another celebrity dies. This week it is the death of Mary of Peter, Paul and Mary '60s folk singing fame.

#8 The Washington Nationals in spite of talent still stink!

#9 The Washington Redskins in spite of talent still stink! And I still don't like Dan Snyder holding on to the Redskins as the team mascot. He needs to change the mascot name just like my alma mater did. Miami University of Ohio, which was named Miami after an Ohio Native American tribe, was the Redskins when I went to college. Today they are the Redhawks.

#10 James Madison University in Harrionsburg, VA is a Division II college and last week they almost knocked off in overtime at College Park, MD that Division I powerhouse the University of Maryland. Go Duke Dogs! Jeanine give a cheer! Maria give a cheer. JMU rocks.

#10 Fall is football season. Go watch a game this coming weekend.

Holidays: Distinctive vs. Generic

I can remember when all holidays were distinctive. None were this generic. Washington's Birthday was celebrated on his birthday which is February 22'nd. Lincoln's Birthday was celebrated on his birthday which is February 12'th. (Today is Lincoln's Birthday!)

Then some folks for some reason or another combined these two birthday celebrations and holidays into one generic event called Presidents' Day.

What is the result? Confusion to the third degree, that's what. First, whose birthday are we celebrating? This new name is so generic that we could be celebrating one of the following or all of the following on Presidents' Day:

Washington's Birthday
Lincoln's Birthday
All living presidents' birthdays
All past presidents' birthdays
The current president's birthdays

Or who know we could be celebrating the president of Mexico's birthday or the president of Russia's birthday.

Second concern. What does this do for school children? Long ago American grammar students knew the names of the two most famous presidents(Washington and Lincoln) and the birthday of each one. I bet most grammar students don't know the actual birthday of either Washington or Lincoln. They just know that teachers always talk about these two presidents along with Martin Luther King in February.

Third concern: three remembrances in the shortest month of the year is bound to result in one of the following folks getting shafted in the recognition department: George Washington, Abraham Lincoln or Martin Luther King.

Then there is the case of what happened to Armistice Day. Does any young person know about Armistice Day?

Moral of this blogpost: re labeling things is not always a wise idea in the long run. Think before you decide to tweak something. You might just end up with New Coke.

New Year's Resolution

One of my resolutions for 2009 is each day take time to look at something that is pretty like a photo or painting of flowers or some other aspect of nature. I just recently read that looking at pretty pictures of flowers has health benefits like lowering your blood pressure.

Black Knight's Butterfly

This butterfly bush is called The Black Knight. Along came a yellow butterfly to sample its blossoms. Photo taken from my dining room window. Is it just me or does it seem that all the news you hear and read about these days is so gosh darn depressing. We need to be informed citizens of the world. However, scandals, political accusations, bizarre beheadings, outbreaks of war, horrific traffic accidents---sometimes the news gets to be too much to take. Then I find it is nice to take a break from all that bad news and just look out the window and watch nature at its best. Black Knight's Butterfly---just what the doctor ordered. Or God.

You know---I think that is another reason why so many people blog today. They want to spread some good news about their family and friends at work and play. To spread the word about life that is not lived in the fast lane or reported on in the corporate owned media. (Again, you need to click on each photo to get a real closeup look.)

Too Darn Hot Part 2

Look over to the right and you will see the heading LABELS. Look below LABELS to find the word ARIZONA (1). Click on ARIZONA (1) to see what I wrote in August of 2007 when it was this hot in Virginia. Then ask yourself what colors of the rainbow do you think of when it is HOT, HOT, HOT! I think of shades of red, orange and bright yellow like these flowers here.

On another note let me add that I will learn this coming Monday how to give glucose shots in case Jack has another very low blood sugar that renders him unable to give himself a shot. Oh, what fun! When our little life threatening event was over Sunday morning Alan, Leah, and I all agreed that Jack should have had a piece of that chocolate cake at the Saturday evening party. Then he wouldn't have had low blood sugar. But he may have had very high blood sugar.
Diabetes is a 24 hour tightrope balancing act between food intake and amount of body activity expended. The unknowns on the tightrope are what cause the falls. Unknowns like when the body is using up extra energy fighting disease or heat or cold or stress. The stress of being outside in 95 degree very humid weather was the culprit on Saturday.

Random Musings 2/26/08

#1 This February is flying by. Each week brings another primary or another award show or another race like the Daytona 500.

#2 Speaking of races, I guess there is a new dog in the race to the White House. Or maybe I should say old dog. I think Ralph Nader is 74. Here's my thought for the day: if Nader lives to be 100, will he still be running for president?

#3 Is is possible to get through the winter without getting either A. a cold or B. the flu? Both Jack and I have have endured a solid week with a bad cold. And now the flu bug has hit our daughter's family. I've decided that this is what I don't like about winter. It is the season for colds and the flu.

#4 Inspite of everything looking to the contrary, spring is just around the corner. During yesterday's drive across Prince William County I noticed many trees developing a haze of color around their branches indicating I think that the buds are growing bigger and getting ready to burst forth in several weeks. And last week I noticed yellow forsythia in bloom in Arlington.

#5 Another sign of spring approaching---the robins are back and checking out the lawns for worms and grubs.

#6 I'm either getting too old or else the Academy Award Show was a bust this year. Jack watched it. I went off to bed. Boring. And am I the only person who is getting tired of the preshow red carpet fashion business? Frankly I don't care who you are wearing in the dress and jewels department. Just pick up your bridal train and move on!

#7 The TV media is playing up tonight's Democratic debate like it will be the super bowl of Democratic presidential debates. And in the meantime Cleveland, Ohio is due to get more snow and ice. What the TV media hasn't reported is that many Ohioans have already voted for their favorite candidate be it Democrat or Republican. I know some of my relatives already have done so. I tend to wait till the actual day of voting. I guess I always think that something could occur news wise that might change my vote.

#8 Next February will seem dull in comparison to this February and all the
presidential campaigning. And is Romney throwing his hat in the ring for the second time? I don't know. I just read something to that effect on the internet. I know, I know. Don't believe everything you read on the internet.

#9 The Washington Post just ran a story on the return of guess what, bed bugs. Holy crap they are back! People are picking the little fellows up in motel and hotel rooms and bringing them home in or on their luggage.
And the cure for bed bugs is a turn in your dryer. I don't think I could get my kingsize bed into my dryer though.
