The Manassas Chapter of NARFE invited a Prince William County firefighter to come and speak to the group on fire safety. Here are some of his suggestions for staying safe:
*
1. Check your fire alarms at least once a year to see if they are still operable. Replace if needed.
*
2. Check your fire extinguishers once a year to see if they are still operable. Most fire extinguishers need to be replaced every fire years. Dispose of inoperable fire extinguishers by taking them to a hazardous waste disposal site.
*
3. Remove clutter from each room of your home and garage, especially stairs and landings.
*
4. If a fire occurs, first of all don't panic but remain calm and think thru the problem. Act quickly.
*
5. To smother a range fire in the kitchen use either a pot lid or baking soda to cover the flames.
Don't try to carry a burning skillet/pot to the kitchen sink. Smother fire at the range.
*
6. The way new homes are constructed today means that you have a much smaller window of time to escape a fire. Get out in under than two minutes.
